I have worked with Data Lab for approximately 15 years. University of Chicago Lewis F. Last autumn, as part of the University of Chicago's orientation for new undergraduates, some 1200 young people made their way to our campus and took a battery of placement examinations in the course of a day and a half. These exams included nearly twenty language tests and a smattering of tests in science and math. By the end of the second day, within seven hours of the end of the last exam, Data Lab had scored all of the exams, assigned the course placements based upon these scores (in some cases using intricate algorithms), and produced an array of reports, including an individual result sheet for each student and exam listings sorted in various ways. It is a kind of miracle. And it is a miracle that Data Lab has performed for us annually for over twenty years. The registration of our incoming students depends upon these placements, and we depend upon our friends at Data Lab to generate the placements within an almost unbelievable turn-around time.
